PLA Cup FAQs

1.Durabilité & Impact environnemental:

Oui, PLA cups are commercially compostable, meaning they require industrial composting facilities with high temperatures and specific conditions to break down completely.

PLA is made from renewable plant-based resources (like corn starch or sugarcane) unlike traditional plastic which is derived from petroleum. PLA’s production generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions and it’s commercially compostable, reducing landfill waste. Cependant, the environmental impact depends on the entire lifecycle, including transportation and end-of-life disposal.

While PLA cups are compostable, their recyclability is limited. Many municipal recycling programs do not accept PLA. Check with your local recycling center to see if they accept PLA cups.

While PLA is biodegradable under specific conditions (industrial composting), the term “biodégradable” can be misleading. It doesn’t mean it will break down quickly in any environment. “Commercially compostable” is a more accurate description.

2.Practicality & Usage:

Generally, no. PLA cups are designed for cold drinks. Hot liquids can cause the cup to warp or melt.

Non, PLA cups are not microwave safe.

Non, PLA cups are not dishwasher safe. Hand washing is recommended.

PLA cups are reasonably durable for their intended use (boissons froides). Cependant, they are not as strong as some traditional plastics and could potentially leak if mishandled or damaged.

The shelf life of PLA (Acide polylactique) cups is typically 12 to 24 months when stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Over time, PLA can degrade, especially in warm or humid environments. Proper storage in temperatures below 40°C (104°F) will help maintain their integrity for the longest possible period.
